Background of the Center of Excellence in Tropical Medicine

The Hospital for Tropical Diseases is a specialized medical center renowned for its expertise in tropical medicine, including parasitic infections, febrile illnesses, and travel-related diseases. With more than 60 years of experience since the founding of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine in 1962, the hospital has continually advanced medical knowledge and passed on its expertise to physicians and healthcare professionals both in Thailand and abroad. Beyond patient care, it also serves as a leading research hub, contributing new insights that enhance the effectiveness and quality of treatment in the field of tropical medicine.

Within the hospital, several highly specialized services—rarely available in other medical institutions—have been developed as Centers of Excellence in Tropical Medicine. These centers include four key clinics:

  • Fever Clinic
  • Parasite Excellence Clinic
  • Diarrheal Excellence Clinic
  • Thai Travel Clinic

Parasite Excellence Clinic

Parasitic Excellence Clinic

Parasites are organisms that live in or on humans and animals, relying on their hosts to survive. There are many different types of parasites, which can enter the human body through various routes. The most common route is ingestion, such as with roundworms, tapeworms, liver fluke, lung flukes, gnathostomiasis and angiostrongyliasis. Parasites can also enter through the skin, including hookworms and threadworms.

The symptoms of parasitic infections depend on the species, size, number, and location of the parasite within the body. Common manifestations may include unexplained weight loss, abdominal bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, skin pain or swelling, chest discomfort, coughing up blood, allergic reactions with skin rashes, generalized body aches, headaches, or blurred vision.

If you suspect a parasitic infection, it is important to seek medical advice. Self-medicating with deworming drugs is not recommended, as parasites vary widely and require accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment for effective care.

Diarrheal Excellence Clinic

Diarrhea is a common health problem in the general population. It is typically characterized by frequent loose or watery stools, sometimes contain mucus or blood, and may be accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, or fever. In most cases, symptoms are mild and resolved without specific treatment.

Diarrhea can arise from many causes. The most common are foodborne illness and infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or certain parasites. In addition, some non-infectious conditions such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, or irritable bowel syndrome can also lead to diarrhea.

While most cases are self-limiting, medical consultation is recommended if diarrhea is severe, persistent, associated with significant fatigue, inability to eat or drink, or accompanied by blood or mucus in the stool.

    • When to Seek Medical Care
      • For acute diarrhea, patients who develop severe symptoms such as fever, marked weakness, or inability to tolerate food or fluids should seek medical care immediately.
      • Care is available at local hospitals or at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, which provides 24-hour services.
      • For cases of chronic or unexplained diarrhea, or when symptoms fail to improve, patients may schedule an appointment at the Diarrheal Excellence Clinic, where they will be assessed and treated by specialist physicians from the Faculty of Tropical Medicine.
